Zoom Room Bed - Case Study

What do you do when a client comes to you with a seemingly impossible project?
Well in this case the first thing you do is you sleep on it.
Entrepreneur Peter Medvin brought a challenge to Asian ProSource (APS) with a concept for a hidden retractable Murphy-style bed that electronically rolls up into a hidden wall cabinet. The Zoom-Room™ wall bed (www.zoom-room.com) required proven materials, attention to detail and meticulous European style design.
This was not an ordinary project, the team of experts at APS had to completely design and engineer the hidden bed literally from the ground-up. The project would first require the development of the specifications for each component in the bed, and there were many; plastic, wood, mattress, motors, and electronics, including a remote control. After the APS design drawings, technical elements and specifications were approved, the sourcing for the project components required selection and coordination with six different factories. The component list is impressive:
• Pre-drilled wood frame
• Hard plastic rail guides (easily installed in cabinet or walls with proper dimensions)
• Footboard designed to allow operation on hardwood floors or low pile carpeting
• High density foam mattress
• Washable mattress cover with appropriately spaced slots for slat supports
• Beachwood slats, with support adjustments for head, neck and lower back
• Hard plastic expandable “accordion” carriage base with side rubber slat cups and plastic rollers
• Hard plastic modular chain to climb up track guides
• Wooden end dowel to keep track and base in proper position
• Wooden base support
• Straps attached to base support to keep mechanism from overreaching rail guides
• Drive shaft supports
• Steel drive shaft
• Two electric motors (110V power source required) with battery backup in case of power failure
• Infrared receiver (must be accessible for use with remote) with safety override release
• Infrared remote with child lock
Each component presented it’s own unique challenge for the Zoom-Room™ bed. For example, the mattress had to be a premium foam mattress manufactured under the strictest level of quality control. The mattress had to Maintain elasticity for decades, without mattress lumps or sagging. Plus, it was necessary that the mattress never needs to be turned. The mattress covers had to be easily removed and be washed repeatedly.
Take a look at the video showing the Zoom-Room™ wall bed in action and you will see the ingenious design of the quiet hard plastic rail guides and the slatted beach wood frame slat base, scientifically calibrated to add support where it is most needed.

Peter Medvin (Below) said of the design, “No one knows it’s there. It just looks like a home entertainment center or home office, the perfect place to hang the wide-screen TV. Then you press the button on the remote and out comes the bed. There’s this huge wow factor.”

How well did APS do on the project? Zoom-Room™ offers a 10-year limited warranty that covers the mattress, mechanism and motors.
And the Zoom-Room™ wall bed was featured on HGTV‘s "Home Rules" as the surprise solution for the cramped bedroom. Towards the end when the new design is “revelaled” to the owners, the show’s designer, Justin Shaulis, says “Now I know you’re asking where the bed is. Zoom-Room has designed this really awesome bed – it actually is stored vertically behind where the art is placed.” And the young wife responding “How amazing is that!”. There were excellent shots of the bed gliding into the room, the young couple trying out the mattress, and the whole cast lounging on it discussing how this design solution will literally change their lives. A great TV debut for Zoom-Room – light years ahead of a Murphy Bed!
The Zoom-Room™ wall bed is yet another success for Asian Pro Source, That is why we say:
